- Brand new surgical instruments must be cleaned before the first sterilization.
- Instruments such as Needle Holders, Haemostat Forceps & Scissors must be cleaned in the open state.
- Whilst autoclaving instruments should be in the open state or closed only to the first ratchet position.
- This will avoid tension and stress fractures occurring during sterilisation at temperatures of up to 134 °C.
- Only use an instrument for the purpose it was designed.
- Needle Holders should always be used with an appropriately sized suture needle.
- Sterilization is not a substitute for cleanliness!

- Tungsten or Wolfram is a metal element that was discovered in 1783 by the Swedish chemist Karl Wilhelm Scheele.
- Element symbol = W, Ident. Number = 74, Atom weight = 183,86.
- Melting point is approx. 3.380°C (higher than all other known metals), boiling point is 5.500°C.
- When combined as an alloy with metal carbides, it achieves nearly diamond hardness.
